Director's Alert: Anchor Changes Made at WKYC

WKYC announced Thursday that Carole Sullivan and Eric Mansfield will be moving to the 7 PM anchor desk soon as Channel 3 continues to "re-define" local television in a way that will have a positive effect on our community during tough times.

Carole returned to Channel 3 in a part-time capacity after moving to Michigan with her husband. Prior to that, she was the morning news anchor with Jon Anderson at WKYC.

Eric Mansfield has been Channel 3's Akron Canton Newsroom Chief and former anchor of the Channel 3 produced "Akron Canton News" which ended earlier this spring.

Both will bring a fresh new approach to our 7 pm newscast while Channel 3 News Anchor Romona Robinson will handle the 6 & 11 pm broadcasts as newsrooms across the nation begin shifting away from traditional two anchor teams for their newscasts.

While times are difficult, we look forward to the new challenges that our business has to offer and the opportunity this presents us in television to re-invent ourselves.

This is good news, for people who watch the news at 7 pm! How about a 5 pm newscast? I think people are "news'd" out by 7 pm. I think Carole and Eric will make a good team...I miss her on the morning news show, but this newscast should be on at 5 pm! Thanks!

The station has a contract to keep Dr. Phil on the air at least for another year or two in the 5 pm hour.

Where's the big shocker? One would have thought the world's magnetic poles where flipping with your earlier announcement.

They poles still may.. you'll have to wait and see.

The 7 pm show won't be the same show as it is now - that's for certain.

After 8 years of solidly being a WKYC viewer of local news, it appears time to start looking for somewhere else to find local news. Sincere reporters and anchors are falling to the wayside one right after the other...those reporters and anchors were what set WKYC apart from other local news stations.

At 7p, I will soon be changing my channel to FOXNews and getting the full hour of FOXReport with Shepard Smith. I used to watch WKYC at 7p and get the remainder of the half hour of FOXReport.

At 7p, I don't want to get the "fluff" of a newscast that resembles an early morning show.

The station says it's the sign of the times, I find it comparable to the state of the Plain Dealer. It has lost its identity and is losing readership. Whatever happened to respect not only of the truth but respect to give the viewers a premium broadcast? Guess the ratings will show it's signs of the times. As a long time WKYC viewer, I find it ashame.

No one says it's going to be fluff..

Wait until you see it before you judge it. We are NOT Action News, nor do we ever wish to be.

To Anon@8:28,

You want a serious, sincere newscast so you are choosing FOX News? I cannot think of anything MORE tabloid and fluff than FOX. FOX has been responsible for almost every change that has soiled journalism in the last few years(outrageous stories, news crawls, flashy bugs/graphics and politically biased "journalists"). Even on the local side, FOX8 is nowhere near as good as WKYC. Action News, they're in the same boat as WJW, obsessed with American Idol and having dedicated Entertainment news segments.

I honestly don't see an anchor change making night and day differences in the quality of the newscast. And why does a slightly "lighter" news cast have to be considered bad? With all the economy and crime stories, a story like Romona's kids or Del going to the restaurant makes for a good change in a gloomy news cast.

Should bring more energy to the broadcast.

To the viewer touting Fox News- If you want Billo's unfair and unbalanced opinions or sexual innuendos locally on your news- be my guest. I'll stick with WKYC.

As a longtime WKYC viewer, I am happy with this change, but you really needed to take it one step further. I think your anchors are great, and I like Carole and Mark. Like someone up above said, when are you going to compete with the other channels and have a 4:00 and 5:00 pm news program?

I watch the news while cooking and eating dinner. I've already watched 2+ hours of news by 7:00 pm. Unfortunately, I'm forced to watched the "sky is falling" news channel for one of the hours. I would much rather be watching WKYC. PLEASE listen to your viewers and make some positive changes!

Why do you have news on at 7:00 pm anyway? Who are you competing with? Wheel of Fortune? This makes no sense. I realize you have contractual obligations with Dr. Phil, but PLEASE consider this for the future and give the viewers what they want!

Looking forward to the change. Carol was always energetic, no matter how busy she was (radio in the morning, news at night, etc.)

Always a good thing to have a nice smiling face when the world is going terribly wrong.

Wow, I thought this was a rumor! With the uncertainty of Sullivan's future with the Browns, a move could be in the near future. I'm surprised she would commit to this gig since she might not be here long. Thoughts?

We still can't believe that WKYC could let Tim leave. But, we agree with Ch3Fan that this is good news. We've missed Carole, and Eric has always been a solid reporter. We hope the 7 pm newscast stays. Some of us don't get home from work in time to see the news at 5 or 6.
As for FOX News...what a joke. If you think what they report is news, then you are probably also a fan of the tabloids.

Carole and Eric, I'm looking forward to it, I like both Tim and Romona and they will be missed. I do think they need to rethink 5 am people. Hollie is fine at the weather desk, and Mark is OK. But Abby and Maureen, well if I can't say anything nice.......

I cannot believe they are making Carol Sullivan anchorwoman....Her voice always sounds like she has larynxgitis....I can't stand listening to her, and I keep trying to clear "my" throat.

Carole is not a good anchor - channel 8 here I come

I'm sorry to see Tim go, but the newscast should be fine with Romona. If I'm not home to watch the 6p news, then I catch the 7p one. So I'm glad it's on WKYC. I really miss Del's Folks on Saturdays. I loved his restaurant visits. Another spin on this would be great.

I'm glad WKYC still has standards and hasn't resorted to the tactics of 8 or 19 with baiting viewers to watch. 19 is so much worse than 8 though.

Frank--I think I have a better idea. Put Carole back on mornings with Hollie & Mark, and put Abby on at night with Eric. I think these would be better teams, but that's just my opinion :-)

Carole's voice is a little raspy, but I like her. I miss the days of Carole, John Anderson and Hollie. As much as I think Mark Nolan is probably a nice guy, I just don't care for him much as an anchor.

Can't stand Carole's voice either. I was so glad when she left the first time. She shows no depth in her way of presenting the news. Sooooo sorry to hear that Tim is leaving.

Why remove Tim White? He is the best.

weres tim going hes the one that made the news at six i will be wacthing fox again yea!

Anonymous said...

I will definitely miss Tim...I can't believe Channel 3 is letting him leave.

Tim has finally gotten the anchor holding him down from around his neck. Now Romona may have to show up for work 5 days a week and for two shows.

Why not let Ramona do the 6pm news solo and Tim do the 7pm news solo ?? I guess Eric and Carole work for peanuts.

First they drop our newscast, now they take our one good local reporter to Cleveland. It would be nice to have an Akron newscast again!!!!!

This is crazy! How can you let Tim White go? I would rather see Romona go. I like Eric Mansfield, but can't stand to listen to Carole Sullivan. I hope your ratings aren't that important because I'm switching channels, especially since you can't seem to get Abby Ham to tone it down in the morning.
What's going on down there on Lakeside?
