Looking Back At The Blizzard of '78 From Action 3 News

The 40-year anniversary of the Great Blizzard of 1978 is was this week as you probably know. The blizzard dumped extensive amounts of snow over Northeast Ohio starting Jan. 25, 1978, though some snow had already fallen across the region, making conditions even worse. Snow drifted 20 feet or higher in some spots. The storm shut down the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region for two days, forcing 45 National Guard helicopters to execute 2,700 missions across the state as thousands of people became stranded. Fifty-one people were killed during the storm, according to the National Weather Service . Back then, WKYC was branded as Action 3 News. Take a look back at some of the memories of that great event.

Blast from the Past: The Action 3 News Basketball Team

This Action 3 News classic photo has recently shown up and was taken around 1975 when Doug Adair was the main news anchor at our station. All of the folks in the picture have moved on in their broadcasting careers - except one. See if you can guess who is still at Channel 3 today. Blast from the Past: Action 3 News Mini Cam

One of our regular readers, Dan Hirschfield, sent us some photos from the 1981 Cleveland Airshow that he scanned from a batch of 35mm slides in his collection. They included a series of pics of a WKYC "minicam" crew taping a guy riding a motorcycle through a bunch of flaming wood. Dan points out that if you look really hard at the second to last pic in the sequence you can just see the motorcycle in the middle of the inferno and the last pic is the motorcyclist himself safe and sound discussing his feat. It's a flashback from the days of the ol' WKYC suburban. Dan says he does not recall if the reporter on scene was John Darling or Mini Cameron. We've brought the still images back to life with a little Director's Cut magic. Thanks Dan for sharing with us. If you have any old vintage WKYC photos, please send them to us and we'll feature them on the blog. Our email is: fmacek@wkyc.com
