Farewell to Another Long-time Friend: Obie Shelton

It seems like I'm writing farewells to my co-workers on an alarming, regular basis - and the fact is, that's true. And it hurts personally and professionally.

The changing media environment is having a tremendous impact on everyone involved in the media from radio, to tv to newspaper. Only the economy is to blame.

Friday was long time reporter Obie Shelton's final day at WKYC after his contract was not renewed by the station, according to the The Plain Dealer who reported this news last week. Obie had been with WKYC for 22 years. Before that, Obie worked at WEWS.

Obie's signature bow ties, warm smile and friendliness will be just three things that the heart of Channel 3 News will be missing as we move forward. We had a nice going away party for Obie on Thursday and he looks forward to the new challenges that await him.

As many of your know, Obie is a gifted musician and will have time to explore his 2nd love. Look for Obie to perform with the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra in January.

We all wish Obie lots of love and happiness.

Sad to lose a familiar face, good luck to you!

We'll miss you, Obie! You are a classy -- and fun -- reporter and any station would benefit from your experience.

(Now if WKYC would only misplace Abby Ham's and Hollie's contracts...)

I am soooo disappointed about Obie leaving WKYC. I've always enjoyed him on the morning show, especially whenever he was sent to Cedar Point to try the newest attraction. What a loss!

I agree about misplacing Abby's contract and also Mark's--the morning show has taken a nose dive. It isn't even enjoyable to watch anymore. All the good ones either leave or have contracts not renewed--doesn't make sense.

Obie was likable, but truth be told, he was not very polished on camera - he always seemed like he was writing the lines in his head as he spoke them and this resulted in a bit of stumbling over words. However, he would not be the first I would get rid of. That honor would go to Hollie with her recipes and dog-gone weather. When are networks going to learn that we want weather people who just give the weather, not be "personalities'. We don't need a Rachel Ray giving the weather. if that is what Hollie wants to be Rachel Ray she should get another gig and let someone just report the weather. And please - no more of Hollie and Abby doing cheers and dances with local high schools every Friday.

Actually, I believe we will have to agree to disagree. I love watching Abbey and Mark in the morning and Hollie is refreshing. Although, if your a boring stick in the mud I can see where having refreshing faces could urk you. Get a life folks. These are people with personalities if you want boring watch paint dry.

Please don't get rid of Tim White. He is so intelligent and such a good match with Romona.
