A Night to Remember: WKYC Shines at the NATAS Central Great Lakes 57th Annual Emmy Awards

By Frank Macek

Saturday night was one of those nights that reminds you why we do what we do.

The station came home with multiple Emmy Awards, and it's hard not to feel proud of the talented individuals and teams who earned that recognition. These aren't just trophies — they represent countless hours of storytelling, dedication, and a commitment to journalism that truly matters to our community.

Here's a moment to celebrate each of the winners.

•Peter Fleischer took home the Emmy in Promotion/News for his Kirtland Cult Killing Documentary. Peter's work on this project was nothing short of extraordinary — tackling one of the most haunting chapters in Northeast Ohio's history with the care and rigor it deserved. Well done, Peter.

•Lindsay Buckingham earned the Emmy in Reporter Features/Human Interest for "Heartstrings." If you've seen the piece, you already know why it won. Lindsay has a rare gift for finding the humanity in every story, and "Heartstrings" is a perfect example of that talent on full display.

•Danielle Wiggins was recognized in Education/Schools - News for her piece "Beat of Belonging." This was a story that needed to be told, and Danielle told it beautifully. Her ability to connect with the people and the community she covers continues to set a high bar for everyone.

•The team of Matt Hein, Leon Bibb, Susan Moses, and Jeff Reidel won in Nostalgia News for their series "Then & Now." There is something special about the way this group came together to bridge the past and present for viewers. It's collaborative storytelling at its finest, and this Emmy is well deserved.

•News Feature - Serious Report, Lindsay Buckingham, Jessica Miller, and Chris Blake were honored for "Justice & Mercy: A 30-Year Journey of Forgiveness." This is the kind of journalism that stays with you — challenging, compassionate, and deeply human. Congratulations to all three.

But perhaps the recognition that means the most is the one earned together: the station was honored with the award for Overall News Excellence presented to WKYC News Director Julie Flynn. That's not one person's accomplishment. That belongs to every producer, editor, photographer, reporter, anchor, and behind-the-scenes team member who shows up every day and gives everything they've got.

Also worth noting are two individuals inducted into the Silver Circle — Monica Robins and your blogger Frank Macek. The Silver Circle honors those who have dedicated 25 or more years to broadcasting excellence in our region. Monica's contributions to health reporting and community connection have left a lasting mark, and Frank is deeply honored to be recognized alongside her.

Saturday nights like this one don't happen by accident. They happen because of a culture built on hard work, storytelling integrity, and a passion for serving the audience. Here's to carrying that momentum forward and continuing the work that makes Northeast Ohio proud.

Congratulations to everyone!
