Flynn’s newsroom leadership experience also includes a four-year stint as news director at WZZM 13, TEGNA’s ABC affiliate in Grand Rapids, Michigan, from 2018 to 2022.
Her local roots run deep. Flynn previously spent over 15 years in the Cleveland market, including time as WKYC’s 11 p.m. executive producer from 2013 to 2017, where she also helped shape “Donovan Live.” She began her career at WEWS NewsChannel 5, working her way up from assignment desk intern to producer.
Flynn’s work has earned her multiple Emmy Awards, including recognition for Outstanding Evening Newscast in both 2015 and 2025, as well as numerous Cleveland Press Club honors for Best Newscast in Ohio. She has also received the Scripps Howard Lighthouse Award and several regional Murrow Awards.
“Julie Flynn is a dynamic newsroom leader who represents the very best of Cleveland,” said John Trevino, WKYC Studios president and general manager. “Her deep local roots, editorial instincts, and forward-thinking approach to content make her the ideal choice to lead WKYC's news team. Julie has the trust of our journalists, a strong vision for the future, and a passion for serving Northeast Ohio across every platform.”
For Flynn, the new role is a homecoming and a challenge she embraces.
"I'm thrilled to take on this expanded role at WKYC, a station where I've had the privilege of growing my career,” Flynn said. “Cleveland is my hometown, and I'm committed to delivering the stories that matter most to our community.”
Flynn holds a Communications and English degree from Fordham University.
