Decision 2008: Your Vote Counts Even in TV

We want your vote beyond the political election. We want to know what you think of Channel 3 News' new graphics and music package that we launched last week.

This is a package being instituted at all our Gannett Television stations and doesn't necessary reflect our likes or dislikes.

Make your voice heard -

Graphics are okay - blue suits WKYC well, but the Tower needs to come back.

Hey Frank! I voted!

As a viewer ... love the graphics ... hate the music.

Congrats on a smooth change, though!

as I said before. The Graphics are great. I will say I did hate to hear that jobs were lost in the graphics departement. The dang Music is horrible. No morning cut for Morning and Noon shows. At least the tower had cuts for all newscasts. There are no NBC chimes in the music. Its bland and I know its not WKYC's fault for the change. I would be happy with Tower coming back right now. Does anyone else agree?

What i dislike about the package is that it is TOO Generic. Not that having a parent company standardized graphic is bad...., but it allows for no individulization of the community the station serves. At least with the later Hearst-Argyle packages, they allowed for variations to show city-scapes and community scenes. Maybe the "golden age" of news opens/graphics is over... (I still miss the old "Cahnnel 3, You got a friend" and the "Catch 5" jingles... K.

I love the new graphics. The colors and animations are great, especially in HD. And the blue color is very cool. I was never a fan of the previous package. I didn't like the orange color, it was dark and bland. But the blue variation used on the former Akron Canton news on TWC was nice though. The package used right after the HD transition was also nicer.

For the music, I'm happy it changed, but I'm not to crazy about the new music. It sounds generic and almost 80s like. The one bumper after ER last night sounded like an old 80s or techno track. I wasn't too crazy about "The Tower" but I liked the NBC integration. Personally my favorite WKYC music was the Impact package used from 99 to 01.

But the thing is the same people are there doing what they've always done so appearance changes are not that bad. And maybe over time the package will become more broken in and a bit more local.

The new graphics are ok, but I much prefer the previous music package, especially with the strong NBC chimes woven into it. Very distictive and dignified, yet it still conveyed that sense of urgency that a classic news theme conveys. It also had a fuller, more orchestral sound. The new music sounds too generic synthy.

cheers,

October 15th, 2008 saw a new change to Channel 3 News--the graphics and new music package.

Last summer, after viewing Frank's blog(s), WKYC would be getting a new chyron graphics package shipped from some city or town near Denver, Colo. and most Gannett-owned stations would start using this along with a new music package which would debut later this year for WKYC Channel 3 News. I got a little bit of a preview by going onto the website www.axisgraphics.tv for the chyron information and man, these graphics look awesome, along with the fonts used.

As a working adult in my 30's, I only get to watch mostly the 11:00 pm broadcasts, including the weekend editions. First of all, the graphics are fantastic. I'm glad you went back to the on-screen fonts of "helvetica" or "swiss" rather than the fonts' package from February 2007 to October 15, 2008--the italicized "zurich" or "swiss" fonts.

The WKYC music package of Oct. 2008 is something that I'll be getting used to after 7 years listening to NBC's "Tower615" (versions 1 or 3). Channel 3's previous music packages (the one debuted in 2001 & 2006) is to my liking as an NBC viewer and it felt more NBC-liked watching every night w/ Romona & Tim, Mark, Betsy and Jim. What, no NBC chimes in the main theme music? You got to put the chimes for "Decision 2008" coverage.

The WKYC opening graphic:
Where is the word "NEWS" by the gold Channel 3 logo? All we see is "wkyc-hd" below the logo. "hd" is italicized.

The TV screen right below the news anchors' desk:
It has been the current opening graphic that I stated above. In the 2nd week, it's the same crystal chyron background, but w/ the "wkyc[NBC peacock logo]com" logo on a solid white rectangular background. I don't like this graphic. Please change it to the gold Channel 3 logo that opens the broadcast.

Other than the graphics/music package of 2008, I will still watch your station night after night. I have always been a viewer of your local news since 1981 and will keep watching WKYC and NBC.
