Notes From the Newsroom: 4/30/10

By Frank Macek

Time for another behind the scenes look at what's going on behind the scenes at the WKYC Digital Broadcast Center.

Our best wishes to Michael O'Mara who leaves Channel 3 News to become Vice President at Hennes Paynter Communications - a crisis management company. Mike started his news career on March 14th, 1977 and winds it up today, April 30th, 2010. We'll definitely miss Mike's journalistic experience and flair.

May sweeps are underway. Sweeps started Thursday and run through Wednesday, May 26th. Channel 3 has a "Must See" May all planned for you. So be watching.

The Director's Cut Blog has learned that Fox 8 will become a news competitor with a 7 p.m. newscast launching soon. We certainly welcome the competition. But remember Fox 8, Monica and Eric play hard and we'll be playing to win. Remember the 7 PM Anchor Olympics? Bring it on!

The April sweeps period was another good one for Channel 3 News. We continue #1 at 5 a.m., 6 a.m. 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. in the all important demos of adults 25-54. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno also held solid at #1 since Jay rejoined the show as host after the Olympics.

The Director's Cut Blog will be switching over to a new blogging platform, so our blog may not get updated for the next several days. We hope to be back soon. Until that time, we'll be posting updates on our Facebook page @ http://www.facebook.com/frank.macek and on Twitter @ http://www.twitter.com/fmacek. If you haven't friended us or aren't following us, please do so. You don't want to miss anything.

Don't forget if you haven't joined us on Facebook yet, please become of friend of Channel 3 News and Channel 3 Weather. We have special on-line content just for our Facebook friends including your chance to be our Facebook Friend of the Day, daily behind the scenes promos, sneak peeks at NBC shows, a daily programming guide of what's on Channel 3 and much more.

Gannett Revenue Increases 15% During the First Quarter of 2010

Gannett Co., Inc. (parent company of WKYC-TV) reported today that earnings per diluted share for the first quarter of 2010 were $0.49 compared to $0.34 for the first quarter of 2009. Results for both quarters included special items as noted below. Excluding these items, earnings per diluted share for the first quarter of 2010 were $0.50, double the comparable figure of $0.25 for the first quarter of 2009.

Results for the first quarter of 2010 include a $2.2 million tax charge related to recent health care reform legislation and the resultant loss of tax deductibility for retiree health care costs covered by Medicare retiree drug subsidies ($0.01 per share). Results for the first quarter of 2009 include a $39.8 million pre-tax settlement gain related to one of the company’s union pension plans ($24.7 million after-tax or $0.11 per share) and $6.6 million in pre-tax workforce restructuring costs ($4.3 million after-tax or $0.02 per share).

Details of these special items and their effect on results are included on the Statements of Income, Business Segment Information and Non-GAAP Financial Information schedules which follow.

"We achieved very strong results for the quarter. All of our business segments delivered substantially higher operating income and operating cash flow in the quarter. We more than doubled adjusted net income despite lower revenues and reduced our debt by approximately $260 million in the quarter," said Craig A. Dubow, chairman and chief executive officer. "The momentum we had at the end of last year continued through the first quarter. Revenue trend comparisons improved in the quarter reflecting the positive impact healthier economies in the U.S. and the UK had on advertising demand as well as advertising revenue associated with the Winter Olympic Games. We also benefited from significantly lower costs due to greater efficiencies and substantially lower newsprint expense. We are well positioned for continued growth as the economy improves and we are extremely encouraged by the revenue trends and our ability to create and capture operating leverage."

"Earlier this week, we were pleased to join eleven other major media companies in announcing plans to form a standalone joint venture to develop a new national mobile content and distribution service to make mobile digital television universally available to consumers," he added.

Director's Cut Alert: Former WKYC News Director Passes Away

    Paul Beavers
The Director's Cut Blog has learned from former WKYC Production Manager Rich O'Dell that former WKYC News Director Paul Beavers has died. Paul worked at Channel 3 beginning around 1987 through March 1992 when he left to beome News Director at KUSI in San Diego.

Paul ended his journey on earth at his Reno home [on April 10th] with his loving wife and children, and a wonderful hospice nurse at his side after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Hastings, NE. He spent his youth in Edgar, NE graduating from Edgar High.

He earned his journalism degree from UNO and started his television news career with KMTV in Omaha before joining NBC in Los Angeles. His broadcast journalism career took him around the country before he retired to Reno.

Paul's passion was golf (he could claim two holes-in-one) and he loved, fishing, Amateur (Ham) radio, bridge and traveling. Paul was loved by all who had the honor of knowing him. He had a brilliant mind and a gentle spirit and inspired all to act with kindness and integrity.

Rich O'Dell, now Vice President/General Manger of Gannett owned station WLTX in Columbia, South Carolina, fondly remembers Paul, "He was one of the good guys...a true journalist who always made sure that the focus of Channel 3 News was on the people of NE Ohio. Paul championed investigative journalism and challenged the entire team to be the best. During his life, he mentored so many young journalists who learned from the best. Broadcasting will miss Paul Beavers."

Rich jokingly tells the Director's Cut Blog that Paul's claim to fame is that he discovered Jane Pauley, "At least that's what he said," O'Dell added.

Paul is survived by his wife of 47 years Dorene; children Thomas, Gregg (Krista) and Jonette Ayubi (John-Paul) and 8 grandchildren.

A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, April 15th at South Reno United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Mary's Hospice and CaringBridge.org.

Conan O'Brien To Make TBS His New Late-Night Home

Editor's Note: Both NBC and FOX affiliates are breathing a big sigh of relief over this one.

    ---
NEW YORK -- Conan O'Brien is headed to TBS to host a late-night talk show expected to debut in November.

The network said Monday that the program will air Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. Eastern, shifting TBS' "Lopez Tonight," starring George Lopez, to midnight.

Monday's surprise announcement comes the same day O'Brien starts a two-month, 30-city live tour in Eugene, Ore., amid persistent reports that he was likely to claim Fox as his new late-night home.

O'Brien left NBC in January after hosting "The Tonight Show" for just eight months. His predecessor in that slot, Jay Leno, then reclaimed the hour. As part of his parting deal, O'Brien is barred from appearing on TV until September.

    Notes From the Newsroom: 4/5/10

    By Frank Macek

So sorry for the lack of updates the past week or so, Your blogger took a little time off for vacation and to spend with the family during some trying times. On the fortunate side, the weather could not have been better. Welcome to Spring - or is it Summer alrealdy?!?!

Now, here's a catch up look at some of what has been going on here at the WKYC Digital Broadcast Center.

March sweeps have concluded and WKYC continues to have good momentum following an outstanding February sweeps period. In the all important Adults 25-54 category, WKYC was number #1 at 5 AM, 6 AM (tied with WJW), 6 PM, 7 PM (tied with "2 1/2 men") and 11 PM. The "new" 'Tonight Show with Jay Leno' was also #1 in the demos at 11:35 p.m., beating David Letterman on CBS.

WKYC, The Plain Dealer and Ideastream (WVIZ-TV and WCPN-FM) kick off a year long campaign this week called "Fighting Fat" as we bring obesity epidemic into focus and find ways to solve it. Senior Health Correspondent Monica Robins will follow some of our viewers on their weightloss journey. We'll hear their stories and battle plans for fighting fat. Look for other interesting articles in the PD and on Ideastream and stories are always available on wkyc.com @ http://www.wkyc.com/news/health/fightingfat/

Welcome to Bill McKinney to the WKYC team. Bill joined our staff last week as WKYC's new IT Specialist.  He replaces Carl Marks who is moving to Gannett's Traffic Operations Center in Denver. Bill previously worked for the famed Telarc in IT and audio recording.

Our heartfelt sorrow to Alan Courtright and his family after the passing of his father - long time newsman Ken Courtright. Ken passed away over the weekend and was part of the KYW, WKYC radio family a number of years ago. According to our blogger partners at Ohio Media Watch who have written an wonderful article on Ken, "In addition to his time at WERE, Courtright was also heard on many incarnations of 1100 AM in Cleveland - KYW, WKYC, WWWE "3WE"...Ken Courtright passed away 'just in time for the 5 PM news' on Saturday" Your blogger worked with Ken's son, Alan, at the old WRMR/850 AM during the "Music of Your Life" days and wish his family well.

Also, we extend our deepest sympathy to long-time WKYC colleague Mike O'Mara on the passing on his mother in Michigan over the weekend after a lengthy illness. You can reach Mike with your good wishes at mikeomara@wkyc.com or visit him on Facebook. He'd appreciate hearing from his co-workers and friends of the family.

Gannett Broadcasting Announces New Workflow Solution To Power Information Centers Of The Future

Editor's Note: The following is a press release issued on Friday about new technological changes coming to all of our Gannett television stations, including at the WKYC Digital Broadcast Center.

    ---
McLEAN, VA - Gannett Broadcasting today announced it will integrate The AP's ENPS broadcast production system and BitCentral into Information Center operations at each of its television stations across the USA. ENPS will become the news operating system for all Gannett stations while BitCentral will provide content management and distribution through its Oasis and Precis play-out and asset management system.

A unique process was used to determine vendor selection. A Gannett innovation team consisting of employees from various stations, representing content, production, and technology, began by crafting a shared vision of the workflows needed for the Gannett Information Centers of the future. Those needs were then compared with proposals submitted from a diverse group of vendors to determine who best met the needs of the group's vision. ENPS and BitCentral were the unanimous selections.

"I'm extremely proud of the team and the process they used in determining both the need and the solution," said Dave Lougee, president of Gannett Broadcasting. "The addition of these systems reinforces Gannett stations as the innovative content leaders in their markets. We believe that the combination of ENPS and BitCentral's Oasis and Precis provides our stations with the best workflow systems available. With these additions, our multimedia journalists will be able to deliver better content to any platform, and have the resources of all Gannett properties at their fingertips - at all times."

"ENPS is the premiere newsroom operating system in the world today," said Rob Mennie, vice president/senior news executive. "The integration of ENPS into our Information Centers will provide superb functionality and play a key role in the expansion of multi-platform content development. Producing unique, relevant, and interesting local content is what Gannet stations do best. ENPS will help them do it even better."

"The BitCentral products are very impressive," said Jeff Johnson, vice president of technology. "They'll allow our stations to easily share content seamlessly, giving us the speed and flexibility required today and in the future. We're enthusiastic about our new partnership with BitCentral."
